Join Our San Diego Team: Part-Time Designer

Transform lives through the power of home.

Humble Design San Diego is seeking a dynamic, empathetic, and creative team member to design welcoming, personalized homes for our clients leaving homelessness. This position is critical to the delivery of our mission to provide dignity, security, and joy to our neighbors as they begin the next hopeful chapters of their lives.

What You'll Do

Deco Day Prep

You'll be the heart of our design process, meeting with clients to understand their dreams and preferences, then crafting homes that reflect their unique stories using donated treasures. Your week will include:

  • Meeting with clients to discuss their home design needs and preferences

  • Designing warm and welcoming homes using donated items that suit each client's personality

  • Writing weekly design plans that capture client stories, needed items, and volunteer tasks

  • Pulling all items for the home (furniture, kitchen and bath essentials, bedding, art, and decor)

  • Coordinating meaningful projects and activities for our volunteer teams

  • Communicating regularly with clients to ensure their homes are perfectly prepped

  • Collaborating with our moving teams and packing decor and accessories

Deco Day Magic

Installation day is where dreams become reality. You'll:

  • Meet clients to review the exciting day ahead and establish comfortable communication

  • Welcome and guide our amazing volunteer teams

  • Direct all aspects of home design including our opening circle, full installation, reveal, and closing circle

  • Work alongside movers and volunteers to bring homes to life

  • Install and hang items like art, wall decor, and curtain rods

  • Orchestrate and narrate the client reveal while capturing these precious moments through photos and video

Post-Deco Care

After the magic happens, you'll:

  • Organize unused items and clean our warehouse after each project

  • Upload photos and videos to Google Drive

  • Share client stories and transformation photos on our social media channels

  • Support our team through weekly staff meetings and occasional evening or weekend events

Team Collaboration

As part of our tight-knit San Diego family, you'll:

  • Monitor and communicate inventory needs with our Operations & Warehouse Manager

  • Manage and regularly stock designer tool kits

  • Maintain design-specific areas in our warehouse (staging, craft area, call room)

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a positive, friendly, and can-do attitude

  • Be a passionate advocate for our mission

  • Show understanding and empathy, especially when talking with clients

  • Be resourceful and scrappy—everything is donated, and we work magic with what we have

  • Lead with humility—this is a service position with responsibility to all people connected to Humble Design

  • Guide volunteers with integrity, kindness, and clear communication

  • Be comfortable moving and lifting furniture, boxes, and decor daily in a warehouse environment

Schedule & Compensation

Position Details:

  • Hours: 20-22 hours per week

  • Pay: $19.00 per hour

  • Warehouse Days: Monday and throughout the week as needed to prepare homes (approximately 7 hours/day)
