Bridging Barrios
Bridging Barrios is an arts and community initiative harnessing the healing and connecting power of art to elevate the voices, stories, and creativity of people affected by homelessness.
In spring of 2026, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego opened its doors to the landmark show, GIANTS: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.
Within this stunning exhibition was a collection of striking photography featuring the people and places of Barrio Logan, captured by photographers from Barrio Logan. This collection – entitled “Hometown Heroes” – was purchased from the gallery walls of Por Vida Cafe in the heart of the Barrio and hung on the gallery walls of MCASD alongside other show-stopping works of art.
“Hometown Heroes” inspired dreams and compelled action.
Barrio Logan-based nonprofits Humble Design and The Monarch School Project serve our neighbors experiencing and leaving homelessness through the power of art and design. Monarch teaches unsheltered children and families that they are scholars, artists, and neighbors. Humble Design creates personalized homes for families and veterans who have left homelessness, giving our neighbors beautiful, dignified sanctuaries from which to rebuild their lives.
Inspired by “Hometown Heroes,” these neighborhood nonprofits joined forces to co-create an homage to the hometown heroes we serve, conceiving of an art exhibition featuring portrait photography of Humble clients displayed alongside original artwork created by Monarch students.
Bridging Barrios was born.
Soon, more organizations joined the collaboration. Powered by the multimedia strength of Future Is Color; custom printing and framing services from L+L Printing and CG Art Collective; and the inspired invitation to share this evolving and traveling show by the Lattatore Foundation, Dreams + Ducats, and Por Vida Cafe, the Bridging Barrios exhibition began to take form.
Together, we share the powerful stories of Humble clients who have left homelessness for good and Monarch students who channel their artistic genius to rise up into resilience and strength.
Together, we lift up the power of art to create true community
and to build bridges across barriers and barrios.
